Practical IT Workshops


Considering increasing demand from members to provide practical exposure to use of computers as an audit tool – GAS/ CAAT, IS Audit of Banks, Systems Audit, the Committee on Information Technology has started organizing practical workshops on so many topics. Many Practical Workshops have been organized in different parts of the country and have been very well received by members participating in them.


The practical workshops, as the name suggests, start with a brief introduction followed by a lec-dem (lecture cum demonstration) sessions highlighting major aspects on the theme of the PW. The participants are then required to do the practical exercises as a part of the workshop in case of full day workshops or at their convenience in case of video conferencing workshops.


The practical workshops are either organized as a full day workshops at the branches or as video conferencing sessions of two hours each.Workshops can be scheduled at the convenience of members intending to participate, as indicated by the region/ branch.

Workshop Themes

The Committee on Information Technology has currently identified the following themes for the practical workshops to be organized on an all India basis:
  1. Systems Audit of Banks: The workshop aims to provide an introduction to banking applications today, typical requirements, RBI checklist, processes/ procedures, apart from getting an opportunity to meet and share experiences with practitioners auditing banks. These workshops have been very well appreciated at Delhi/ Chennai/ Nagpur/ Mumbai.
  2. Using CAAT’s/GAS: The workshop aims to introduce the use of Computer Assisted Audit Techniques for auditing through the computer by making use of the CAAT Resources CD provided by the Committee on Information Technology. The workshop would show the way ahead for candidates to explore and use CAAT tools for their work. These workshops introduce the use of Computer Assisted Audit Techniques for typical accounting/ auditing requirements. The workshop would start with a brief introduction followed by sessions on (a) Intro to CAAT Resources CD & Installing a CAAT Tool, (b) Importing Data, (c) Intro to typical functionality like Stratification, Aging, Summarization, Pivot Tables, Reporting, Bedford’s Law & Sampling. The workshops can be organized on any of the tools available on the CAAT Resources CD issued by the Committee on Information Technology at Introductory/ Intermediate/ Advanced levels.
  3. Systems & Process Assurance (SPA) / Information Systems Audit: This workshop provides an introduction to processes/ procedures, checklists, used by IS Auditors in typical assignments and share practical experiences.
  4. MS-Excel as an Audit Tool: This workshop explores advanced facilities and features of MSExcel to undertake typical accounting and auditing operations.

Practical Workshops on Computer Assisted Auditing Techniques/ IS Audit/ IS Audit of Banking Applications

Members interested in participating in above workshops are requested to contact their Regional/ Branch Offices to organize the above workshops and send a mail to with subject “Practical Workshop”.

Howto Attend –Whomto Contact

Members are requested to register for the workshops with the Regional/ Branch Office. The Committee on Information Technology would assist the regional/ branch offices in organizing the workshops by providing details of faculty members who can organize the workshops and provide master copy of background materials.

Workshop Fees

Considering the cost of Materials, Faculty Support, Computer Centre, Refreshments the full day workshop costs about Rs.1,000/- per participant for a batch size of about 25 candidates. For a two hour practical workshop on video conferencing with 15-20 candidates at each centre, the direct cost of faculty support, materials and video conferencing comes to about Rs.300/- per participant Members of the ICAI interested in taking these workshops have to apply for registration to the workshop using the Registration Form available with the Prospectus or by filling the online form available at along with the requisite fee.
